WINDHOEK – Suspended acting Secretary-General of the National Union of Namibian Workers, (NUNW) Alfred Angula, who faces a charge of fraud was due to plead to the charges last Wednesday at the Katutura Magistrate’s Court, but could not do so.
He was due to plea to the charge but the matter could not proceed because the prosecution team received new instructions from the Office of the Prosecutor General, Prosecutor Fatima Mendonza informed presiding Magistrate Conchita Olivier.
As a result the matter was remanded to October 22, for the PG’s decision and for further investigations.
Angula was granted bail of N$50 000 last year October, which was also extended until his next appearance.
He faces a charge of fraud and theft from the Namibia Farmworkers Union (NAFWU) involving about N$1.2 million according to the charge sheet. The money was donated to the union by a foreign donor agency.
Angula was arrested after the donor agency, Fes Belgium, laid charges of fraud and theft against him.
The offence was allegedly committed between January 31, 2012 and December 31, 2012. Angula was arrested in December last year and was denied bail during his first appearance. Only after a formal bail hearing was he granted bail.
Angula was the Secretary-General of NAFWU until July 2011, when he took up the position of acting Secretary-General of the NUNW, the umbrella union following the unceremonious departure of Evilastus Kaaronda.
