NYS brass band dazzles at the Africa Netball Cup 2024

NYS brass band dazzles at the Africa Netball Cup 2024

SWAKOPMUND – The National Youth Service (NYS) Brass Band, led by Drum Major Alex Nakatana, delivered a stunning performance at the Africa Netball Cup 2024 at the MTC Dome on 7 December.

The band, fresh from their recent graduation, played a central role in the event, performing national anthems and showcasing their musical talent. Their performances brought an extra layer of energy and creativity to the tournament. Speaking before their performance, the Drum Major shared his excitement.

“We’re honoured to be here. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, and to be part of an event of this importance. Music, for us, is about creativity, passion and bringing people together.”

The band’s musical style is shaped by military brass traditions.

“Our training is based on military brass music, so we aim to combine precision with passion in every performance”, Nakatana noted.

The performance was especially significant for him, as it marked his first official show since graduating.

“This is a big moment for us. After our graduation, we’re excited to start performing at events like this. We want to share our music not just within Namibia, but internationally as well.”

The Africa Netball Cup 2024 brought together young people from across the continent, and the NYS Brass Band’s participation added a vibrant cultural element to the proceedings. Their performance of the national anthems and their music showcase was a hit with the crowd, reflecting the band’s commitment to both creativity and discipline.

Looking to the future, Nakatana and his bandmates are eager to continue growing their craft. “We hope to keep performing and take our music to bigger stages, both locally and abroad. We’re excited for what lies ahead.”
