Okakarara trade fair rescue operation on

Okakarara trade fair rescue operation on

OKAKARARA – Following weeks of uncertainty, Okakarara mayor Samuelline Ngairo says they are working around the clock to ensure that the 16th edition of the Okakarara Annual Trade Fair takes place.

If all goes according to the rescue operation, the trade fair will take place next month.

Speaking to New Era this week, she admitted that the organisers are facing a few hurdles such as the pending financial commitment by sponsors towards this year’s edition, and uncertainty if all farmers will have their animals in top shape on time for the expo.

Despite the challenges, she is adamant that the work that the organising committee has done in the last few days will go a long way in determining whether the trade fair will take place next month.

“Preparations are in full swing. Our wish is to have the trade fair during the first week of 2-8 September. All will be determined by our corporate sponsors. Our wish is for the Okakarara Annual Trade Fair to take place. It has created a good reputation for the town, and it allows economic revival for the town. However, for all this to happen, funds are needed – and to date, we have not received any financial commitment from our stakeholders. We are still in discussions with our potential sponsors, but have not made any commitment. Without their support, it is difficult to stage this event,” said Ngairo.

On their earlier decision to sideline Okakarara Town Council CEO Ernst Katjiku and his leadership team from the event, the mayor confirmed that the decision has since been reversed.

“The town council leadership has not been banned from participating in or organising the event. However, there had been a misunderstanding, which has been cleared. Both the political leadership and the administration are collaborating to host a successful trade fair. The office of the CEO is currently tasked with coordinating the organisation of the event. We do not have much infighting as portrayed in the media, and neither is perceived infighting the cause of the current situation,” she added.

She further rubbished claims that the accounts of the trade fair are in a sorry state.

She also poured cold water over claims that accountability, as far as funds generated from the expo over the years are concerned, is zilch.

“There has not been any incident of mishandling of finances of the Okakarara Annual Trade Fair to date… if funds are not available [lack of sponsors], the town council will find it difficult to successfully host the event,” she said.
