OKATYALI – Namibian Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo has officially inaugurated a new police station at Okatyali village in Oshana Region.
The office, consisting of the mini-police station, officers’ accommodation and ablution facilities, was built at the cost of more than N$5 million.
The police chief said the construction of the station is a milestone in achieving the vision of the Namibian Police.
“Some of the crimes frequently reported in Okatyali are gender-based violence, assaults and stock theft. So, this police station will serve a great purpose in combating crime in Okatyali and surrounding villages,” he said.
He encouraged the nation to unite in the fight against crime by avoiding buying stolen items.
“By willingly buying stolen goods, you are encouraging thieves to continue stealing, but if we unite and stop buying stolen goods, theft will decline because thieves will know that there is no market for their goods,” he added.
Ohamba Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo of Ondonga, who was also present at the inauguration, urged villagers and headmen to collaborate with the police to effectively fight crime.
“Police services are now brought to you. Headmen should report crimes happening in your villages. Do not pick sides in combating crime. Whether the suspect is from your house or not – a crime is a crime. It should be reported to the police,” he stated.
Oshana governor Elia Irimari applauded the police for their dedication in constructing the police station, which was proposed many years ago.
“Today, we are not merely opening the doors to a new building. We are opening a gateway to enhanced safety, justice and community service. The establishment of the Okatyali C-Class police station represents a critical investment in the well-being of our citizens. It is a testament to our dedication to providing law-enforcement with the resources they need to protect and serve,” he said.
Former inspector general of the Namibian Police Force Sebastian Ndeitunga commended Shikongo for accomplishing projects that previous leaderships could not complete.
“I want to thank Inspector General Shikongo for his hard work and dedication. There is no greater work than carrying on your predecessor’s legacy,” he stated.
In past years, the police in Okatyali constituency operated from premises that were donated by Okatyali constituency councillor Joseph Mupetami.
Neitunga and Nangolo applauded Mupetami for his commitment to serving his people.
The C-Class police office have also been graced with a brand-new police vehicle.
Shikongo promoted Okatyali station commander Aili Lineekela Nambala from warrant officer to inspector during the inauguration ceremony.
Nambala’s promotion is effective from 1 August 2024.
