Okongo
The chairperson of the Okongo Regional Council, Paulus Mwahanikange, says many developments are taking place in the constituency.
Mwahanikange who also serves as the Okongo constituency councillor spoke exclusively to New Era at his constituency office in Okongo.
He highlighted that water points are being installed in Okongo despite poor connections for the water pipelines.
“We have about 57 water points that are operating well while 47 applications are still pending,” said Mwahanikange.
He said his office in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry has done a great job with water point installations.
He said most of the villages receive water while their animals use boreholes.
Apart from the water infrastructure, Mwahanikange also touched on the feeder roads that connect major routes with local areas. There are 38 feeder roads in the onstituency that connect growth points to the Kalahari highway.
He requested the Ministry of Works and Transport to upgrade some of the feeder roads to gravel roads.
“Most of the feeder roads were already proclaimed by the ministry of works to will be gravel roads three to four years back, but until now there is no change,” elaborated the councillor.
He said people have to travel to the district hospital in Okongo but are really suffering because of the roads.
“Our constituency is sandy, and our people are suffering to get to their destinations and growth points,” said the councillor.
Other than that, Mwahanikange said there are only three clinics in the constituency and they are quite a distance from one another. The clinics are situated at Omboloka, Olukula and Ekoka.
Clinics are oustanding for Omauni Oshalumbu, Oshitishiwa, Ombundia, Oshuuli, Oluwaya, Onamafila, Oshifitu and Opepela, which are also far from each other. He said clinics for Onamafila and Omauni were supposed to have already been constructed but the ministry was “taking too long”.
The electricity line in Okongo covers Oluwaya , Ohameva, Oidiva, Ekoka and Olukula villages.
Outstanding places to be electrified are Omauni, Oshalumbu, Ehafo, Oshushu, Oluhapa, Ombundiya , Olupale Police Station, Okalunga village which serves the San community, Onamata, and Eedobe Combined School that urgently needs electricity .
Okongo also has quarantine area for game such as eland and kudu.
