Ombazu, Eraka festival slated for Friday

The renowned Ombazu and Eraka festival, which celebrates the Ovaherero people’s unique heritage, is set to take place this weekend at Okozonduzu in the Okakarara Constituency.

Since 2018, the festival has featured various cultural events such as traditional dances, music, storytelling and food stalls, providing an in-depth understanding of Ovaherero culture.

The festival has previously toured the country, with editions held in Okakarara and Okamaruru on the outskirts of Okondjatu.

Confirming the event to Nampa on Monday, coordinator Charles Veneruru Mieze stated that the festival was formed in response to the growing trends of modern culture and influence, which at times tend to disregard culture.

“This event is aimed at strengthening the roots of the culture of the Ovaherero people and their language. Due to the modernisation of the world and influence of improving technology, young people tend to disregard their culture, and prefer modern things,” he noted. The occasion will feature a variety of activities, including elders reciting stories passed down through generations about the aftermath of the Nama, Ovaherero massacre from 1904 to 1908.

Mieze went on to say that the festival also seeks to conserve and promote Ovaherero traditions.

“It creates a platform for the Ovaherero people to showcase their identity and educate others, fostering cross-cultural understanding and respect,” he stated, adding that it also draws visitors and small vendors to help sustain local businesses and communities via sales. The festival will formally begin on Friday, with the main event set for Saturday, and will include traditional activities such as Outjina, Omuhiva, Ondoro and Onderera.

Similarly, several speakers will educate about the history and impact of the genocide, before concluding with musical entertainment.

This year’s edition is sponsored by Hitambo Virtual Academy, the Foundation for Genocide Education, and the Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. –Nampa
