OMUTHIYA – Oshikoto education director Aletta Eises has expressed concern about the poor performance of learners in the Omuthiya circuit in last year’s national examinations, compared to the previous year.
She was speaking during an award ceremony for the Omuthiya circuit held at Omuthiya-Iipundi Senior Secondary School on Friday.
She said only 28 learners out of 13 000 in the circuit’s 32 schools managed to perform well last year.
Eises pointed out that the water challenges experienced late last year at some schools might have contributed to the learners’ poor performance, noting that that should not have discouraged them from performing well.
“It is, however, worrisome that we are only awarding a few learners in the circuit and teachers,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, Ekulo Senior Secondary School has emerged as the best-performing school in the grade 11 results, followed by Olupale Combined School in second position and Okangororosa Combined School in third place.
The circuit has performed well in Oshindonga, Oshikwanyama and Computer Studies, but recorded a poor performance in History, Economics, Development Studies and Physical Science.
The best junior primary school award went to Onankankuzi Primary School, while Amweelo Combined School received the best combined school award in the region.
The Omuthiya circuit award ceremony was sponsored by businessman Herman Nekomba, who sponsored the five best-performing schools in the region’s eight circuits, each with a laptop, printer and N$2 000 in cash.
In his remarks, Nekomba said education is important, as it teaches people to be successful.
‘We invest so heavily in education with the little that we have, and I encourage more sponsors to come on board and assist the Namibian child,” he said.
