Ondjola tourney draws thousands to Iitananga

IITANANGA – The 15th annual Ondjola Tournament at Iitananga village in the Uukwaludhi Omusati Region saw MPSH emerge as champions of the five-day sporting extravaganza that attracted participants and spectators from across northern Namibia.

MPSH claimed the top prize of N$30 000 plus gold medals, while Island Boys secured second place earning N$22 000 and silver medals. Olupuma finished third with N$11 000, and Rundu Rangers took fourth place, receiving N$7 000.

The tournament, which kicked off on 23 December 2025, featured 32 football teams, eight volleyball teams, and eight netball teams competing.
In an interview with Nampa on the sidelines of the tourney, Ondjola tournament organiser Page Kashikuka said football and cycling events began on 23 December, with cyclists covering 60-70 kilometres.

Boxing matches were held on 24 December, while other sporting activities continued throughout the event period.
Kashikuka reported a significant growth over the years, saying participation increased by 70-80% annually, and “even professional football players from the Namibian leagues and national team members are participating.”

The event employs over 70 people, including 11 referees, 20 security personnel, and more than 10 cleaning staff. Management consists of approximately 12 people overseeing various subcommittees handling logistics and operations.

Owner of Kambwa Trading, David Sheehama, who has been a major sponsor for 15 years, has established a mobile depot at the venue for the over 140 SMEs selling food and beverages.
Sheehama said the depot reduces transport costs and time for vendors, enabling them to maximise profits during the five-day event.

“We brought the depot here so SMEs can buy stock without travelling to Tsandi or Okahao. They just walk two minutes to restock,” Sheehama said, adding the mobile depot includes cold storage facilities ensuring fresh products for customers.
Partners like the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) provide ongoing support, with Namibia Breweries contributing a performance stage.

Kashikuka highlighted cooperation among vendors and maintaining a no-gate collection policy despite significant administrative and facility costs.

Participants praised the tournament’s community impact, with a first-time vendor from the Ohangwena Region noting the unique competitive environment among businesspeople, though they suggested better stall organisation and strategic placement for improved accessibility.

The tournament attracts visitors from neighbouring areas, including Angola, with organisers planning to expand international participation next year.
The Namibian Police Force ensured security throughout the event, contributing to a crime-free atmosphere. Organisers face ongoing challenges, including inadequate toilet facilities and network connectivity issues, but remain committed to annual improvements supporting local economic development and youth engagement, Kashikuka said.
