Ongos crowned Super League champions

FC Ongos Ladies were crowned champions of the 2025/26 FNB Women’s Super League after a dramatic conclusion to the season on Saturday, edging out defending contenders NDF Mighty Gunners by a single point.

Ongos secured the league title with 55 points after a convincing 3-0 victory over Julinho Athletic Ladies FC in their final match of the campaign. Their win, coupled with Mighty Gunners’ goalless draw against Windhoek City Sporting Club, ensured that the title headed to Ongos.

The championship victory marks a significant achievement for the club, which remained focused on its own performance despite the uncertainty surrounding results elsewhere.

Mighty Gunners finished the season in second place with 54 points, just one point behind the champions. Khomas Nampol Ladies completed the top three and walked away with third-place honours.

For their triumph, FC Ongos received N$300 000 in prize money. Mighty Gunners earned N$150 000 as runners-up, while Khomas Nampol Ladies were awarded N$100 000 for securing third place.

Individual accolades were also handed out to the season’s standout performers.

Mighty Gunners’ Leena Alweendo enjoyed an exceptional season, finishing as the league’s top goal scorer with 22 goals. Her impressive performance earned her N$10 000 for the Golden Boot award.

Alweendo’s influence throughout the campaign was further recognised when she was named Player of the Season, receiving an additional N$15 000 prize.

FC Ongos goalkeeper Zoleka Nkabinde was honoured as the Best Goalkeeper of the Season after playing a crucial role in her team’s title-winning campaign. Nkabinde received N$10 000 for her achievement.

Speaking after the final whistle, Mighty Gunners head coach Salome Iyambo admitted that missing out on the title was a painful experience for her team.

“I feel very bad, but that is the nature of the game. You win some, you lose some and this was one of those deciding moments that we could not uphold,” she said.

Iyambo explained that her players gave everything they had in their final match, but were unable to find the winning goal that could have secured the championship.

“The girls tried very hard, but the final goal was not coming. We settled for a draw even though we wanted to win,” she said.

Despite the disappointment, Iyambo believes the team can learn valuable lessons from the season and return stronger next year.

“I think we have made some mistakes that we need to correct going into the next season. Some of the responsibility I will take as a coach in terms of my tactics, while in other areas we need to improve as a team. We cannot afford to repeat the simple mistakes that caused us to lose valuable points. We need to make every game count,” she added.

On the other side, FC Ongos head coach, Shama Gure, described winning the league as an exciting and rewarding moment for the club.

“We are very excited. We came into our last match knowing that anything could happen in the game between Mighty Gunners and Windhoek City Sporting Club,” said Gure.

However, he stressed that his side remained fully focused on their own task rather than being distracted by events elsewhere.

“We were strictly focused on finishing well and I guess it paid off at the end of the day,” he said. The 2025/26 FNB Women’s Super League season once again showcased the growing competitiveness and quality of women’s football in Namibia.
