Twenty teams are expected to tussle for top honours in the newly-launched Ongos Valley Futsal Winter Cup slated for next month in the capital.
Ongos Valley Development made available N$70 000 towards the hosting of the tournament that will be held at the Windhoek Showgrounds Sports Plaza from 28-30 July.
Speaking at the sponsorship handover on Friday, Ongos Valley marketing manager Abed Erastus said they are proud to be the sponsors and hope to contribute to the growth of the sports in the country.
“Futsal is fast-paced football and we appreciate the need to grow the Namibian sports industry and provide a home for talented players in Namibia. We would like to add value to the general health and wellbeing of players across the country,” Erastus said.
Founder of Futsal Namibia Andrei Tirtirau said he is excited that they will host the cup and want to accommodate everyone to play futsal in the near future.
“We are serious with what we do and we really want to understand how we can make it better for everyone to play futsal, and I believe this is a step towards that,” he said.
Tirtirau added that the cup will become a yearly tournament, adding: “We are going to start with 20 teams at this edition and hope to increase the number in the next edition.”
The entry fee is N$500 per team, with cash prizes of N$5 000 for first place, N$3 000 for second place and N$2 000 for third place.
Prizes for the top goal scorer, best fair play and best goalkeeper will also be given to well deserving participants.
Teams will be divided into two groups.
