Student accommodation has become vital in Ongwediva because the town has most of the higher learning institutions in the region.
Ongwediva town council mayor Taara Shalyefu said he got a chance to visit some homes in Ongwediva – and that is when he picked up the need for student accommodation.
“I can attest that we need to provide more serviced land – of course with the limited funds at our disposal,” he noted at the election of office-bearers for the Ongwediva town council, where he was re-elected as the town’s mayor for the third time.
Shalyefu said, over the past three years, they were able to renovate a pump station in the town and provide street lights along Unam’s EDS campus for safety.
They also constructed a water tower at Omatando, Ongwediva, while other developments are still underway.
The mayor then promised to recommit himself to interact with communities, stakeholders, businesses and ratepayers as well as build mutual trust.
Other office-bearers are Ulalia Katonyola as deputy mayor, Fabian George as chairperson of the management committee, Naemi Amuthenu and Jona Helao as members of the management committee, with Ottilie Haitota and Mathews Tiyaho as members of the council.
