The third edition of the Opuwo Annual Mayoral Cup is set to take place on 15 to 16 March at the Newman Katuta Sports Stadium in Opuwo.
The event promises thrilling sporting action and community engagement.
The tournament has grown into one of the region’s premier sporting events since its launch in 2023.
It aims to unite the youth, promote sportsmanship, and provide a platform for emerging athletes.
Moreover, it will create business opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to showcase their products.
Tournament organiser McSean Makono said the Mayoral Cup has not only become a sporting spectacle but also a vital economic driver for local entrepreneurs.
The platform allows small businesses to engage with a larger audience and boost their visibility.
The tournament’s main sponsor Hengarihoff has been a key partner since the inaugural edition, investing N$50 000 in 2023. For the 2024/25 editions, the sponsorship has doubled to N$100 000, a significant boost toward the tournament’s growth. Organisers are calling on additional sponsors to come on board to support the expansion of the event.
Plans are in place for the tournament to eventually evolve into the Mayoral Games, featuring more sport codes.
This year’s edition will feature competitions in these categories: youth football (grassroots teams), Veterans/legends football (players aged 36 years and above, netball and tug of war.
To encourage outstanding performance, prizes will be awarded in the following categories: best player of the tournament, top goal-scorer, best goalkeeper, netball’s best player as well as best shooter.
In line with the tournament’s mission to promote grassroots development, participation is limited to youth and grassroots teams.
The premier league and first division teams are not allowed to compete. However, each team is permitted to register up to three premier league or first division players to raise the competitive level.
Registration fees are as follows: youth football – N$1 000, veterans football – N$500, netball – N$600 and tug of war – N$500.
The registration deadline is 14 March at 14h00.
The official tournament draw is scheduled at 17h00 at the Opuwo Town Council offices. All veterans/legends football players must be 36 years or older.
Players should present a valid national ID before each game. Without proper identification, players will not be allowed to participate – no ID, no play.
To ensure fairness and professionalism, the tournament will feature highly trained referees, certified by the Namibia Football Association and Fifa.
The current champions, Omaheke United from Gobabis, will return to defend their title, setting the stage for another exciting and competitive tournament.
