Man denied bail for alleged torch murder

RUNDU - Antonius Semete, 25, who stands accused of killing his 33-year-old uncle with an axe, was denied bail when he made his first court appearance on a charge of murder, read together with the Domestic Violence Act.

The accused, who appeared before magistrate Barry Mufana in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday, allegedly chopped his now-deceased uncle Adolf Siremo several times with a traditional axe during the early hours of New Year’s Day after an argument over a torch. The deceased died on the spot at Rupara village in Kavango West.

“May the matter be remanded to 24 March for further police investigations and a legal aid application? Bail is opposed, as it will not be in the interest of the public and the administration of justice,” said public prosecutor Variety Matamata, who represented the State in the matter.

Semete remains in custody.
