FNB Wanderers Rugby Club on Saturday beat Western Suburbs 52-19 in the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) league.

Despite the victory, Wanderers remain on second position on the log.

The match took place at Hage Geingob stadium and was well attended. 

Speaking to this publication after the match, Wanderers coach Rohan Kitshoff said he was happy with the team’s performance although he felt the team could have done more.

“It was a great game; our players came to the party and showed what they are capable of during big games. We controlled the game that was good to see, but I feel we should have even done more,” he said.

Wanderers, who are a point behind log leaders Kudus, will be hoping to not drop points along the way, while hoping their rival drop a point to go on top. 

Asked how much of a pressure that puts on the team, the coach said they take every game as it comes. 

“We remain cautious in every match that we play. We want to go on top of the league, and I believe that’s every team’s wish in the league. For us, we don’t have much pressure, but we make sure that we stay focussed and collect maximum points in every match that we play”.

Going forward, Kitshoff said the team will go back to the drawing board and correct where they need to. 

“We played without some of our key players, but this also gave opportunity to those who stepped in. We are going back to the drawing board and fix where we can to ensure we come back strong in our following match next weekend, which is crucial,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kudus’ coach Gawan Esterhuizen said they had a great game against Reho Falcon, adding they now turn their focus on Saturday’s match against Wanderers, which will be the battle for the top of the league.

Kudus won 52-30.

“We had a great game, and that’s how we take every game. We don’t have any pressure; we are more focused on the results. Heading forward, we prepare for our weekend match against Wanderers,” he said.

Elsewhere, defending champions Unam beat United 54-10, while Rehoboth surprised Grootfontein 42-41 in a tight contest.
