OSHAKATI – The Oshakati Town Council has embarked on a comprehensive development plan to build affordable municipal flats.
Town spokesperson Katarina Kamari told Nampa last Thursday that they are constructing 16 flats for low-income earners and people who are new in town in search of work.
The project commenced in Oshakati West on 30 June 2024, and is expected to be completed by 30 October 2024. The total cost of construction will be about N$2.7 million.
“The flats will be available at subsidised rates to ensure affordability for all eligible residents, and this rate is yet to be determined by council upon completion of the project,” Kamari said.
She added that the aim of this project is to increase the council’s asset base, and to ensure that more residents have access to quality living spaces at reasonable prices.
Due to financial constraints, the project will be undertaken in two phases.
The first phase will see the construction of 16 units, the security room and boundary wall. Eight of the units will be one-bedroom units, and eight will have two bedrooms. Phase two will consist of installing tiles, cupboards, interlocks and shade nets.
Kamari indicated that a total of 69 local people have been employed during the construction process, and these builders and labourers are mostly from the informal settlements of Oshakati, particularly from Oshakati West, Onawa and Oshoopola.
She said this was done to create employment, and enhance the economic development of the town.
This project is being undertaken and supervised by the council’s building inspectors, without contracting any external construction company.
