WINDHOEK – -The 2014 Namibian Newspaper Cup will be hosted by the Oshikoto Region after the Combined Organising Committee of the youth competition took the decision on Friday.

According to the NFA Secretary General Barry Rukoro, it was not an easy decision to make considering the merits of the bids from the two regions, which were presented on Tuesday this week. The other contending region was Erongo.

“The Combined Organising Committee had a very tough task to arrive at the clear winner. The quality of the two presentations simply elevated the ceremony to a new level and future similar events will have to live up to this one.”

Rukoro added that the NFA received a letter from the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture confirming that the Erongo Region, in particular the town of Walvis Bay would be hosting another major international competition, which will concurrently take place on the same weekend of the newspaper cup.

In keeping up with the nature of the Namibia Newspaper Cup, the Combined Organising Committee in its effort to protect the Newspaper Cup against undue competition for the support of the masses, decided to award the 2014 edition to the Oshikoto Region.

The committee further congratulated Oshikoto Region for the rights to host the youth competition that caters for under-20 players. “While we wish Oshikoto all the best for the successful organization of the next edition, we want to take this opportunity to thank Erongo for having expressed its interest to host the event and put together such a competitive presentation.

“ Erongo Region is set to host the Four Nation Tournament during Easter next year which is a bi-annual event in that region and should Erongo decide to place a bid in the future, our doors are open,” says Rukoro.

The committee further announced that the expression of interest to bid for the 2015 and 2016 editions of the competition would be open in Easter next year in Tsumeb.
