ONETHINDI – Seventy-six households in the Olukonda constituency of the Oshikoto region have been impacted by recent flooding.
Olukonda constituency councillor Philemon Ndjambula told Nampa on Monday that he received numerous complaints and requests for intervention regarding the severe flooding.
“I received concerns on Saturday while I was away with work. I have forwarded these concerns to the regional council’s chairperson for advice and intervention,” Ndjambula stated.
He noted that many of the affected residents had settled in flood-prone areas, such as water pans and riverbeds, despite warnings about potential water flows.
The flooding, which began on Friday, has impacted approximately 16 households in Etambo village, 17 in Okantyole village, 32 in Onethindi village and 11 in Onethindi proper.
Christophine Mvula (60), who lives with her 10 grandchildren, reported significant property damage.
“The flood has damaged our personal belongings,” she said.
Thomas Pineas (72) appealed to the government for relocation assistance.
Heikky Amwele, acting CEO of the Oniipa Town Council, confirmed that they had received reports of flooding in Onethindi proper and other areas within the town.
“We are on the ground to identify the most flooded areas so that we can render assistance where we can,” Amwele stated.
He added that the council plans to seek assistance from the Oshikoto Regional Council’s disaster risk management team as soon as possible. -Nampa
