Windhoek – Villagers at Ovitoto last weekend donated 50 head of cattle to the Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) under the leadership of chief Vekuii Rukoro.
This is after Rukoro reiterated calls by his predecessor the late chief Kuaima Riruako for subjects to raise funds to sustain the OTA and also to uplift the living standards of the Ovaherero people through scholarships and other developmental initiatives.
The cattle were collected by OTA chairperson and Ovitoto chief Vipuira Kapuuo and were received by the traditional authority’s deputy chairperson chief Bethold Tjiundje, chief Piket Kapukare, and chief of staff at the OTA, Erwin Uanguta, as well as Veneruru Korumbo of the youth league.
Speaking to New Era shortly after the event, Kapuuo’s secretary general Turimuani Eliphas Katuemutima said 10 of the cattle were also sold to the value of N$23 000 which was deposited in the OTA’s bank account.
“The aim is to ensure that we have resources and contingencies to help our people through various challenges,” explained Katuemutima.
“The community should have means to help the poor and vulnerable among us. Well-performing children who do not come from well-off families will benefit from these resources. We will find ways on how to help our people in the community.”
He added that it is the hope of all in the leadership of the OTA that they take care of some of the needs of the Ovaherero community.
He explained that some of the cattle will be kept at farms for breeding purposes after which some will be sold and money kept in the OTA coffers to assist the community in difficult and trying times.
