Namibia Commercial Catering Food and Allied Workers Union (NACCAFWU) general secretary John Paporo has demanded that the Office of the Attorney General call the Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua to order.
Paporo was responding to a New Era report yesterday that quoted Mutjavikua advising union leaders, companies and union members to guard against new unions that use new tactics to try to outsmart long existing trade unions.Mutjavikua was speaking during the signing of the three-year wage agreement between Swakop Uranium and the Mine Workers Union of Namibia (MUN) last Friday in Swakopmund.“The President has appointed the governor to serve all Namibians without discrimination,” said Paporo.
Paporo said all unions, employers and organisations are registered with the labour commissioner in line with Section 57 of the Labour Act.
“If Mutjavikua wants to go back to union politics he must resign as governor and stop using that office to serve his own interests. It is the right of any Namibian to join the union of their choice,” stressed Paporo.
He urged the governor to advise all unions equally and not to compromise the rights and interests of workers at their own expense.
NACCAFWU claims to have close to 3 000 members in the mining, transport and fishing sectors, among others. The union currently focusses on workers in and around Windhoek. It has been operating since June 13 2013.
