Maria Beukes, a retiree, discovered a newfound passion in hat-making. Her journey into the world of millinery began unexpectedly while attending a wedding planner course in Johannesburg.

Beukes (54) said business is good, and she is able to make a living through Ladyee hats.

“I was intrigued by the hat-making course that was being offered as part of the programme. I had no experience with hats, but the idea of creating something so unique and personal was very appealing,” she said.

“It was a life-changing experience. I realised that this was something I truly loved doing,” she acclaimed.

Upon returning to Namibia, she conducted market research, and discovered a niche for custom-made hats in Walvis Bay.

She launched her business in 2016, and has been thriving ever since.

“I have been fortunate to have a loyal customer base. I specialise in creating hats for both men and women, catering to various occasions and styles,” she stated.

While she primarily works alone, she occasionally seeks assistance during peak periods to meet the demand for her handcrafted creations.

Her passion for hat-making has not only given her a fulfilling hobby, but it has become a source of income.

The milliner gives training to young people and anyone who has an interest in the craft at a cheaper price.

“I import material from South Africa because they do not sell it locally. Everything that I need to make hats I buy from South Africa, and most of the designers are from South Africa. Sometimes we run out of stock, which becomes an issue as it lowers the business,” she noted.

She is currently teaching her daughter the business and the art of millinery to take over one day.

“The economy has become tough. Therefore, whatever you can do, do it, and do it right. It is not easy to just stay at home without doing anything. Teach your children to survive on their own when you are no longer there,” she said.
