REHOBOTH – Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has commended the Christian Welfare Organisation for hosting its 20th Annual Pre-Christmas Luncheon for Senior Citizens, a tradition aimed at honouring and supporting the elderly in the Hardap region.
Speaking at the event in Rehoboth on Sunday, Kuugongelwa-Amadhila emphasised the importance of fostering a culture of care within communities. She highlighted that the government’s social welfare programmes, including grants, shelters and food aid, are designed to support vulnerable groups, but urged civil society and individuals to complement these efforts.
“This event is a demonstration of what civil society can do to support vulnerable communities,” she said, calling on others to emulate such noble initiatives.
The Prime Minister also celebrated the presence of several centenarians, including a 118-year-old from Rehoboth, a 111-year-old from Kalkrand, and a 100-year-old from Mariental, as well as many others over the age of 80.
She reiterated the need to curb neglect and abuse of the elderly, expressing the government’s commitment to ensuring their safety and security.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila then extended early Christmas and New Year wishes to the senior citizens.
