KONGOLALA/SINGALAMWE – President Hifikepunye Pohamba toured stretches of the Liselo-Linyanti-Sangwali-Kongola and Singalamwe road last Tuesday when he visited the MR25 road construction project at Singalamwe. The aim of the visit was to assess its progress as part of his two-day official visit to the Zambezi Region.
The MR25 road construction project which started in March 2011 is aimed at upgrading to bitumen standards the long stretch of road covering 200 kilometres. Pohamba was contented with the progress of the road work, adding he would have loved to inaugurate the project before he retires in March next year.
However, the contractors promised to have the road completed between October and November this year, a likelihood that might present him the chance to inaugurate the road.
Three teams are currently involved in the construction work.
The road is being constructed by a Chinese company MCC in partnership with the Roads Contractor Company (RCC) and employs hundreds of casual workers from the Zambezi Region.
During the tour of the region, President Pohamba also visited one of the battlefields during Namibia’s war for liberation.
The heroic battle of Kamenga took place in the border area between Namibia and Zambia in the Singalamwe district and was a victory for PLAN combatants who are said to have killed more than 44 South African soldiers.
During the fierce battle an assortment of weapons of the South African occupational forces was seized by gallant PLAN fighters who subdued the enemy.
The battle took place in March 1987 and the Zambezi Regional Governor Lawrence Sampofu and the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Doreen Sioka were involved in the battle.
