A senior police officer is expected to appear in court today on charges of culpable homicide and drunken driving.

Khomas Community Affairs Warrant Officer Silas Shipandeni said at about 23h00 on Saturday, this officer, who is a commissioner at the police head office, operated his private motor-vehicle along Sam Nujoma Drive under the influence of intoxicating liquor.

The commissioner allegedly bumped a female pedestrian to death. The deceased is yet to be identified.

“The suspect was tested for alcohol consumption and exhaled 0.79 mg/l, which is beyond the legal limit. Therefore, he was arrested,” said Shipandeni.

Meanwhile, the police in the Khomas region said no arrests have yet been made in the incident last week when four elderly people were robbed and assaulted at the Pioneers Park cemetery.

They are all recovering well, and the police are still hard at work in pursuance of the criminals to ensure they are brought to book, added Shipandeni.

A case of robbery with aggravating circumstances was opened after the four persons, aged between 69 and 74, were robbed by unknown men armed with pangas and knives.

“The robbed items taken from the victims are one handbag containing documents, three cellphones and car keys. All victims sustained injuries, but their conditions are stable. Police investigations continue,” said Shipandeni. – ljason@nepc.com.na
