RUNDU – A case of murder has been opened against a police officer who allegedly fatally shot suspected robbers at a temporary roadblock at Ngarama-Teya village in Rundu Rural constituency on Monday night. It was reported the two suspects were shot dead on the spot and two were arrested after the police intercepted a planned armed robbery on Monday at around 21h45. According to the police, the two deceased were part of a gang of four and were armed. “The suspects were shot after they were stopped at a mini roadblock and failed to comply and produce a firearm in retaliation instead. The deceased persons’ details are withheld as the next of kin are still to be informed,” said the Kavango East crime investigations coordinator, Bonifatius Kanyetu. It is alleged that the police got a tipoff that the suspects were on their way to Mashare irrigation project to commit a robbery and the police then set up a makeshift roadblock to apprehend them. In their possession, the police found a Makarov pistol with a scratched serial number, a pistol magazine of four rounds, a bolt cutter and two Okapi knives and a pair of handcuffs. The two suspected robbers who were arrested were charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of housebreaking implements.
