2021 MTC Youth Games postponed

The 2021 edition of the annual MTC Youth Games has been postponed to next year, the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) announced last week.

NSC chief administrator Freddy Mwiya said a congested sports schedule forced them to shift the games to December 2022.

“We won’t have the MTC Youth Games due to the tight scheduled that we have. We are sending a team to the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games in Maseru, Lesotho, and looking at both events happening at the same time, it wouldn’t be possible for us to stage them this year,” Mwiya told New Era Sport.

The tentative date for the next edition of the games is 15 to 20 December 2022.

NSC said all regional structures have been informed of the postponement.

The 2020 edition of the MTC Youth Games, a multi-sport youth competition, was held in Rietfontein and Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa region in December.

Earlier this year, mobile telecommunication giant MTC took over all core matters that pertain to the organisation of the games after the event was last year marred by lack of accommodation for participating athletes, lack of decent meals for athletes and officials, as well as poor hygiene because athletes were forced to use filthy toilets and bathrooms.

The first edition took place in Windhoek in May 2018.
