A MOTORSPORT sponsorship of N$100 000 was handed over to the Windhoek Motor Club, for an action packed Cymot Rally which is being held this week-end in Windhoek starting Friday 4th October, and ending on Saturday at the newly surfaced Tony Rust Race track. The Rally kicks off this Friday at 19h00 at the Tony Rust Track which is planned to be the centre of spectator involvement. Spectators should be at the track between 19h00 and 21h00 on Friday evening and remember the action, and again on Saturday morning when the action starts at 09h00 as well as the final stage at the Tony Rust, where the front runners will be gunning towards the finish at 16h45. This is the second consecutive year Cymot is sponsoring this event, with about 20 entries expected from around the country, with high end rally cars driven by Namibia’s most competitve rally teams. Dick Cornelissen, Melvin Gous and Cecil Koorts who are the main organizing team of the Cymot Rally, are still hot from their victory at the recent Azurite Tsumeb Rally. The team will start as a favourite in their incredibly powerful Star Panelbeaters Subaru WRX 4x4 Turbo, but will be challenged from the similarly equipped Subaru of Tsumeb rivals Richard Himmel and Adolf Botes. Reigning Namibian champion Wilro Dippenaar and Kesevan Naidoo will be aiming for victory in their Total / PZN S2000 Toyota Run X 4x4, but their first objective will be to finish ahead of their title rivals Allan Martin and Berto Mostert in the J&P Hydraulics S2000 VW Polo 4x4. Hoping to steal their thunder the daughter and father combination of Stephanie Botha and Willem Hugo have been stepping up their game dramatically in their ex-Jean-Pierre Damseaux S2000 Griffen Mining Toyota Run X 4x4. The Namibian Rally Championship must boast the most A6 Toyota Corolla RXi 1600 rally cars of any and incredibly quick. Roland Himmel will want to fly the Toyota flag high as would Hanré Myburgh, Hannes Arangies and Pieter Greeff. They might just find their supremacy threatened by the new S1600 VW Polo of Jan Everson and Fanie Botes. Jan and his Ford Ikon have been gaining valuable experience and their progress in a fully-fledged rally car will certainly attract much attention. Proof that consistency pays handsomely when championship points are to be earned comes in the form of newcomers, Rossouw Bezuidenhout and Lourens Barnard, in their almost standard Subaru Impreza 4x4 Turbo. Third overall in the respective drivers and navigators point standings the youngsters will be concentrating on getting their Subaru home for more well deserved points. Cecil Koorts and Oscar Schoombee will be returning to the fray in their ex-Gp N3 Toyota Run X RSi 1.8, hoping to put their big ‘roll’ of 2012 behind them and with the A7 VW Polo still not ready for action Zander Wiese will be returning in his faithful Toyota Conquest RSi 1.6. Hopefully the very attractive looking Toyota MR2 of Tinus Malan will have seen some much needed suspension development, and it is anticipated that a large contingent of coastal competitors will be entering the Cymot Rally as well. The two days of great rally action is brought to you by the Windhoek Motor Club. An informal prize giving ceremony will be held at the clubhouse after the event, where the Andre Havenga band will entertain the people. Food and refreshments will be available throughout the weekend at the Tony Rust Track, and “braaipacks” will also be available on Saturday evening.
Entrance to the Tony Rust gates will be N$10.00 for spectators who will be sure of some up-close action like never before, so keep the week end open for a sizzling dice with the front runners showing no mercy. By Donna Collins
