RUNDU – A 71-year-old visually impaired man on Monday died in a fire incident at Mukekete village in Kavango West. The incident was reported to have happened at about 13h50, whereby it’s alleged that the deceased died in a tent after it was gutted by fire.

The deceased was identified as Kavangu Simbindo, 71.

“The deceased, who was blind, was allegedly alone at home, and it is suspected that he may have tried to light a cigarette which resulted in the tent catching fire. He fatally burnt, and his next of kin have been informed,’’ Kavango West police commander Josephat Abel said.

Commissioner Abel also confirmed that a rape case was opened at Nkurenkuru, where a 27-year-old man allegedly raped his 43-year-old aunt on Friday night.

The incident was reported to have happened at Karayi village near Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West region.

“It’s alleged that the suspect and his friends were drinking at home. The victim then joined them for a drink, and later decided to go home. The suspect decided to escort her home and on the way, he grabbed her, dragged her into the bushes and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent,’’ he explained.

“The victim is a 43-year-old woman, residing at Karayi village. The 26-year-old suspect was arrested, and is expected to appear in the Kahenge Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The victim and the suspect don’t live in the same house,’’ the police chief continued.
