Congo on COSAFA Cup Trophy Tour
Windhoek The COSAFA Castle Cup Trophy Tour started off at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay on Saturday where Okahandja Mayor Congo Hindjou called for greater crowds to turn up at the remaining events lined up before the Cup gets underway in Windhoek from June 11 to 25. Speaking after the event, Hindjou hailed COSAFA and the local organising committee for the idea and called on locals to support the events by turning up in large numbers to rally behind the Brave Warriors. “This Cup competition is very dear to my heart. I played in it and have so many fond memories. Holding the trophy on Saturday sent shivers down my spine, as I reminisced about the days we had back in the late 90s. “I urge Namibians to come to events of this kind and get to take photos with the trophy and meet the legends of the competition. We’re hosting the tournament and we all need to be part of it,” Hindjou said. He was joined in Walvis Bay by Mauritius great Jean-Marc Ithier. The Trophy Tour involves a lot of activities, including five-a-side matches and also has women players square off against their male counterparts. There is also donation of kit to the community by COSAFA, as well as the ‘Stop Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer in Africa’ campaign, which seeks to educate citizens on prevention and detection of the disease. The cause is supported by Namibia’s dynamic First Lady Monica Geingos. All roads now lead to Okahandja on Friday, May 27, with Mozambican great Tico-Tico Bucuane to join Congo Hindjou and China Uutoni for the weekend.  On Saturday, May 28, the Legare Stadium Gobabis will be the next stop for the COSAFA Castle Cup Trophy Tour, where the Brave Warriors will be in attendance. Over and above the trophy tour, there will also be a 24-hour five-a-side football match played from June 4 to 5 at Football for Hope Centre in Katutura, offering a unique occasion for fans to enjoy a day-long feast of football.
