OMUTHIYA – Oshikoto Region will host this year’s Africa Day of Decentralisation (ADD) at Onayena settlement tomorrow. The event will address and raise awareness on corruption and conflict of interest among national, regional and local leaders.
The 7th Africa Day of Decentralisation and Local Development will be commemorated under the theme ‘Fighting Corruption at local level, a sustainable way to transform Africa from within its territories.’
“The theme is in line with the African Union theme of ‘Combating Corruption: a sustainable path for Africa’s transformation.’ As well as article 14 of the African Charter on the values and principles of decentralisation, local governance and local development, which advocates for the principle of transparency, accountability and ethical behaviour at regional and local government levels,” stated the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development’s Permanent Secretary, Nghidinua Daniel.
Daniel said the event will raise awareness on the negative implications that corruption and conflict of interest may have on the delivery of basic social services, social justice and peace to local communities. Another objective is to promote the role of civil society organisations and the media in curbing corruption at a local level.
“It will also promote and raise awareness on the decentralisation policy as a means to enhance participatory democracy, service delivery, sustainable development and socio-economic development,” added Daniel. Meanwhile, the chief regional officer of Oshikoto Frans Enkali said preparations for the occasion are well on track with all logistics in place. “All arrangements are done – we just trying to organise transport to pick up community members from each constituency who are willing to attend. We are fully in support of the idea as decentralisation ensures taking services to the people,” he said.
Stakeholders from 14 regions are expected to attend.
