Five busted for illegally transporting fish

KATIMA MULILO – The Namibian Police yesterday afternoon arrested two Namibians and four Zambians after they were caught red-handed, transporting fish without permits.

It is believed the fish were caught at Lyanshulu in the Judea Lyabboloma constituency and were headed to Zambia.

Speaking during a media briefing, Zambezi station commander Chrispin Mayumbelo said they arrested the suspects at a police roadblock at the turnoff of Liselo-Chincimane road, some 10km outside Katima Mulilo.

Among the suspects is a 47-year-old Namibian woman, believed to be the employer of the Zambian nationals, a 35-year-old Namibian, who was the driver, and the four Zambian nationals aged 24, 27, 30 and 32, respectively, were employed as fishermen.

“I am appealing to our people to apply for fishing permits if they want to fish, and the fishermen must be Namibians. No foreigners are allowed to come and fish in our waters without a work permit,” stated Mayumbelo.

He further warned the police are hard at work to root out criminal activities.

The police also impounded a seven-seater Toyota Noah with registration N6599KM that was used to transport the fish.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
