Goat theft accused gets N$5 000 bail

RUNDU – A 33-year-old woman, who is accused of stealing and slaughtering 25 goats belonging to her neighbour at Siurungu in Kavango West, was granted bail of N$5 000 when she appeared on charges of stock theft in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Christine Nasira Kefas was arrested towards the end of last week and charged with theft. The goats were allegedly stolen between July and November this year.

The police said the complainant suspected her neighbour has been stealing her goats and reported the case to the traditional authority before law enforcement got involved.

A fight almost broke out between the two women when police got involved in the matter.

The court informed the accused of her rights to engage a legal representative of her choice and that she can also apply for a legal aid lawyer who will be provided by government.

“You also have the right to conduct your own defence,’’ said Rundu magistrate Helen Olaiya. The accused opted to seek a lawyer of her choice.

The case was further remanded to 24 March 2022 for further police investigations and for the accused to obtain legal representation. The stolen goats are valued at N$24 500.
