GOBABIS mayor Melba Tjozongoro says the town is ready to host the masses coming for the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup starting tomorrow in Omaheke region.

Tjozongoro told New Era Sports that the town affectionately known as cattle country is hosting the cup for the second time after it first staged the tournament in 2011.

“We are not just ready, but also excited to host this unprecedented 22nd edition of the competition. It has shaped our town differently, and our sports facilities have been revamped,” said the mayor.

The municipal staff will be assisting the visitors and competitors with all necessary services at the event throughout the weekend.

“We have also engaged our business community and different services providers to make use of this opportunity to promote their dealings,” Tjozongoro explained.

“In terms of accommodation, hotels and guesthouses in the vicinity are almost full. Even private residents with accommodation are assisting in that regard. We have many activities coming to our region these coming two months, and most people booked their accommodation in advance,” she added.

Among the benefits, the town will secure injection impetus or incentive and freshness in the town economy.

“Even the food traders will benefit from this event as we provided space for them to trade at the sport ground,” alluded Tjozongoro.

“In terms of security, the mayor emphasised that the Regional Organising Committee and the regional leadership under the guidance of the Governor Pijoo Marikutuka Nganate has arranged with the Nampol to make sure the safety of our visitors and residents of the town is well taken care of,” Tjozongoro explained.

“Safety is priority, and we leave no stone unturned in that aspect. We want these games and everyone here in our town to enjoy the Easter weekend without disturbances. We are on alert,” Tjozongoro warned.
