OSHAKATI - A 32-year-old man who is expected to appear in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court today has expressed regret in attacking police officers. The suspect was discharged from Oshakati hospital on Saturday.

 Police shot him in the leg when he tried to attack and evade them last Wednesday around 15h30 at Oshoopala location in Oshakati.

According to Oshana police commander, Commissioner Naftal Sakaria, the suspect is charged with robbery, assault by threat on the police officer and possession of a dangerous weapon.

He said the suspect was trying to fight the police when he was ordered to stop.

“He took an empty beer bottle and a stone to hit the officer. He then ran back to the police with a knife,” he said.

The officer then fired three warning shots in the air and the fourth bullet struck the suspect on the light leg.

The other two suspects, Petrus Nambundunga (37) and Eliaser Kalumbi (30) appeared in court on Friday. Their case was postponed to 29 September for further investigation.

When New Era spoke to the suspect in hospital, he said he regrets trying to run away from the police officer.

“I was just supposed to handle myself as my other friends did,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Oshana police arrested the three men who were wanted for assault through threatening and armed robbery. One suspect is still at large.

The suspects were found in possession of dangerous weapons and displaying a number plate on the vehicle that does not correspond with the licence disc.

The police recovered a white Polo Vivo, panga, homemade tool for breaking cars and house locks, remote control for jamming cars and house gates, USB and a Bank Windhoek plastic bag containing N$5 coins totalling N$300. The police also found an A4 page with different telephone numbers and different clothes and hats.

The car with an Oshakati number plate and four occupants was reportedly terrorising the area.

“We have since received footage of a similar car from Windhoek terrorising people in Hochland Park from a few days back,” said Sakaria.

The regional police commander urged residents to continue working together with police and never hesitate to share information.
