Kilimanjoro Boxing Club takes development to schools

The MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club is set to roll out a crucial development initiative, which will see them visiting schools in the northern parts of the country to promote and develop boxing among learners.

The club will be partnering with various schools and teachers with the aim of ensuring learners are taught the basics of boxing and that opportunities are created for potential amateur boxers to realise their dreams.

Joseph Bernard, the club’s owner and trainer, shared with this publication that the new approach is primarily aimed at shining a light on those highly-promising young fighters who are often overlooked and have no access to proper facilities and platforms.

“We are living in an era where social activities have taken our societies by storm. Many children don’t get the chance to realise their full potential because they are too occupied with activities that don’t contribute to their personal growth. With this programme, we want to teach children that sports can open doors to many opportunities. Boxing, in particular, has helped many individuals achieve success in life, and we want to encourage and promote this idea,” he said. Bernard further emphasised the importance of having well-trained boxers in regional teams to compete at a high level, saying the new collaboration with schools will be crucial for the club to achieve its mandate of producing great boxers who can bring honour to their respective regions.

“If you examine the recent history of the national boxing championship, we haven’t had a successful run for some time now. As a leading boxing stable in northern Namibia, it is our responsibility to ensure that our regional teams are filled with exceptional boxers. We must work hard to produce top-notch boxers who can represent our regions and the country with pride. This collaboration is critical for us since we are looking at various aspects to achieve our goal,” he accentuated.
