A 46-year-old man was on Tuesday arrested with 47 containers of smuggled fuel from Angola at a bridge near Ompumbu outside Oshakati.

The suspect allegedly sells the 25-litre containers to taxi drivers at Oshakati for N$250.

The suspect has been arrested and is charged with contravention of the Petroleum Products and Energy Act.

Oshana police spokesperson Inspector Thomas Aiyambo said the fuel was confiscated and the vehicle used to commission the crime impounded.

“The 47 containers were recovered as well as the motor vehicle used in the commission of the offence was impounded,” said Aiyambo.

According to Aiyambo, the suspect allegedly buys the fuel from Okatale village in the Ohangwena region.

The village is close to the Namibian-Angolan border.

“The suspect mostly goes to Oshikango in the Ohangwena region nearby the Angolan border inside Namibia at a village called Okatale to buy plastic petrol containers,” said Aiyambo.

The suspect is a resident of Ongenga in Ohangwena.
