Man shot after being mistaken for jackal

RUNDU - A case of attempted murder was opened against a 43-year-old man who allegedly shot and wounded a man (22) whom he allegedly mistook for a jackal.  The incident happened on Wednesday at 19h00 at Karuko farm in Ndonga Linena constituency of Kavango East region.
According to the police, the suspect was walking alone from the cattle post to the main house on the farm whilst carrying a shotgun when he allegedly spotted an unidentified “creature” in the bush.

The suspect reportedly mistook the man for a jackal and fired at him. “After the shooting, he allegedly heard a dog barking and at the same time he could hear a voice of a person screaming, he decided to go and verify and when he arrived at the shooting scene, he noticed that he shot a person who was walking with a dog,” said Chief Inspector Ewald Kavara.

The injured victim was identified as Shevekwa Shikukutu who was heading to the same cattle post where the suspect was coming from.
“He was wounded on the left side of the stomach and the right thigh. He was transported to Nyangana hospital where he was admitted for medical assessment but he is in a stable condition and can walk and speak,” Kavara said.
According to Kavara, the police confiscated the shotgun. –jmuyamba@nepc.com.na
