Man stabs girlfriend to death

A 32-year-old man was arrested on Friday evening in the Omusati Region for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend and mother of his three children to death.

Omusati police regional commander, commissioner Titus Shikongo, said preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased, Magano Aino Ilonga (26), was walking home from work when the suspect emerged from nearby bushes and stabbed her multiple times. She worked at a mahangu grinding store in the Omikwadhaambeli location.

At the time, Ilonga was allegedly accompanied by a man who resides in their village, Ongwali A.

“When they were approaching Oluno village, the suspect emerged from the surrounding bushes, attacked the deceased with a pocket knife and stabbed her multiple times. He also slit her throat, resulting in the deceased’s death at the scene,” explained Shikongo. The investigations have so far revealed that Ilonga and the suspect were in a long-term relationship. They have children aged eight and four, and a nine-month-old baby.

“It is also alleged that the two had a conflict which started last week after the deceased made known her intention to terminate their long-term relationship,” the commander added.

The suspect is from the Eenghalashe village, and has been charged with murder, read with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court today.

Shikongo said investigations are ongoing in the matter.
