Mariental library embarks on career guidance programme

WINDHOEK- The Mariental Public Library has embarked on a new programme titled Life after Grade 12.
The idea initiated last year by Letta Shivute, the librarian, is to inform and advice learners about different study fields, and different jobs in the market. Shivute came up with this initiative when she noticed that learners who came to do online applications to different universities last year, were just applying for almost the same study fields, revealing a lack of information on different career choices. Shivute thus thought it fit to expose the learners to different career choices.

The programme started last week with speeches on career choices at Mariental High School, for both Grade 11 and 12, just to inform them and the teachers about the purpose and the objectives of the initiative. The programme has also invited different experts in different fields in Mariental to address the learners on a weekly basis, from Monday to Thursday at the library. Thus far, experts in human resources, financial fields, legal fraternity and medical field have addressed the learners.  The experts shared the background of the different fields, the aptitude a learner should have to embark on a certain career field, challenges in the field, advantages of the field, salary scale, condition of work and many others.

Thus far the programme has reached up to 65 Mariental High School leaners, and some few out of school youths. The programme will continue to engage other leaners in nearby towns such as Aranos and Gibeon very soon.
