Masterclass identifies value chain for green hydrogen 

A two-day Green Hydrogen Masterclass commenced in the capital yesterday. 

The event brings together experts and the Namibian public from industry, academia, government and MSMEs with an interest in the sector, who met to discuss the various themes related to the research and development of the renewable energy source. 

The event is organised by the Hanns Seidel Foundation in partnership with the Namibia Green Hydrogen Research Institute, the University of Namibia and the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board. 

The topics being discussed include, amongst others, different hydrogen production technologies and hydrogen rainbow, business opportunities in green hydrogen as well as organising and implementing a thriving hydrogen valley and the social, economic and environmental impact. 

Presidential Economic Advisor and Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe were scheduled to deliver the keynote address. 

As global sentiment towards supporting efforts to decarbonise the planet increase, green hydrogen is taking centre stage as an attractive sustainable energy source. 

Namibia currently sits on the precipice of greatness and real economic transformation as the country positions itself to be the sustainable energy capital of Africa and a major player in the global transition to a less carbon-intensive economy through its rich renewable resource deposits. 

Currently, one of the biggest hurdles to the greater application of green hydrogen in Namibia is how it is made, how much it costs and the direct and indirect value it presents across various sectors of the economy. 

It has, thus, become crucial that an information exchange and discussion forum is created to address these questions. 

Organisers of the Masterclass noted that an increase in interest from various local players has the potential to drive investment in the sustainable development of Namibia’s green hydrogen sector.
