WINDHOEK - DTA of Namibia lawmaker Phillemon Moongo claimed he was informed the ruling Swapo Party is in possession of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) that will be used during this year’s national elections.

Moongo further said Swapo is allegedly storing the EVMs at its headquarters in Windhoek.

Moongo made these remarks in the National Assembly on Tuesday when MPs were accorded the chance to ask questions, and as expected, the ruling Swapo Party MPs did not take the allegation lightly.

Swapo MP and its secretary general, Nangolo Mbumba, stood up and shot down the allegation and warned Moongo to stop making “dirty jokes”.

Namibians will later this year go to the polls to elect a government of their choice.

For the first time ever, votes will be cast electronically using the new EVMs.

“We must stop with these dirty jokes in parliament because when some people lose during the elections they will refer to these jokes. I work at the party’s office on a fulltime basis, if you want, we can go there now so that you can go and show me where the EVMs are stored on our premises,” said a livid Mbumba.

Mbumba said the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), which is tasked to administer election activities in the country, is a separate institution from Swapo.

“ECN have their own way of doing things and so do Swapo. They have their own premises where they can keep the machines,” said Mbumba bef
