Naimhwaka to serve on CAA council

Athletics Namibia (AN) president Erwin Naimhwaka has been elected to serve on the council of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA). He was elected this past weekend during CAA’s Region 5 congress held in Durban, South Africa.

Sharing his excitement with New Era Sport yesterday, Naimhwaka said he was delighted to have been given an opportunity to serve on the council of the continental athletics body and looks forward to learning and sharing notes with his colleagues.

“I am thrilled to have been selected as one of the few to serve on the continental body. As a council member, I will be involved in many important decisions that will have a positive impact on Namibia and the rest of Africa. I am looking forward to the challenge and very excited to work with the continent’s most experienced leaders. It is also a chance to contribute to the bigger goal of developing and strengthening African talents and competitions,” he said.

A former athlete himself, Naimhwaka will serve under the leadership of Eswatini’s Zakhele Dlamini, who was elected as the new president of CAA during the weekend’s elective gathering.

Mozambique’s Kamal Juma was elected as the new vice president and Tseliso Phete from Lesotho as the new secretary general.

“We want growth as a nation and as a region at large, so our main focus would be helping the rest of the continent and ourselves as a region (SADC) with various developmental initiatives. I am confident that with my experience and that of my colleagues, we will take decisions that will benefit the continent and our region quite well. We want more sponsors to join athletics, it’s the one big thing that is lacking at the moment. By having more sponsors, the sport will grow and we will have world-class athletes,” he added.
