Nakathila gets mega shot against Berchelt…Tobias finalising agreement

Once the crossing of the T’s and dotting of the I’s has been finalised in the coming days, Namibia’s super featherweight boxer Jeremiah ‘Lowkey’ Nakathila will get another opportunity to return to the global stage to face Mexico’s Miguel ‘El Alacran’ Berchelt in what is expected to be a mega showdown.

Both camps are at an advanced stage of finalising the fight’s agreement, and Nakathila’s promoter Nestor Tobias yesterday confirmed that an official announcement will be made once all details around the fight have been finalised.

“We are at an advanced stage of finalising the bout, and I will update you as soon as all details are sealed and done. For now, it will be unprofessional of me to comment,” said Tobias briefly.

According to international reports, the fight is slated for 26 March at a yet to be determined venue, and will be the main bout of the evening. ESPN will broadcast the fight on all its platforms.

ESPN prominent journalist Salvador Rodriguez was among those who shared details around the fight, further confirming that Berchelt has agreed to face Nakathila.

Berchelt, who hails from Merida, Mexico, has not fought since a stunningly one-sided knockout loss to Oscar Valdez last February. The defeat ended his lengthy WBC junior lightweight title reign, having made six defences spread out over four years.

Nakathila, on the other hand, has spent the majority of his eight-plus year career fighting at junior lightweight, where he also challenged for an interim version of the WBO title.

The 32-year-old Namibian came up short in a one-sided 12-round decision against America’s Shakur Stevenson last June.

Nakathila went on to dust himself off after the Stevenson defeat with a superb second- round knockout win over Zimbabwe’s Ndodana Ncube last October in Windhoek.

The Berchelt vs Nakathila fight is part of an active spring schedule for Top Rank and ESPN.
