Namibia and Zambia agreed to revisit their diplomatic ties in various sectors of the economy.

This follows the senior officials’ meeting of the 10th session of the Namibia-Zambia joint permanent commission of cooperation.

The just-ended meeting was meant for the preparation of the ministers’ meeting, which was scheduled for Friday but was moved at a later stage to be agreed upon through diplomatic channels.

International relations executive director Penda Naanda said during the past two days of the meeting, senior officials focused on some of the crucial matters affecting the development efforts in both Namibia and Zambia. 

“We have revisited issues of common interest in the areas of diplomatic and legal matters, economic and infrastructure development, such as transport and forestry, agriculture, youth and culture, to mention but a few,” Naanda noted.

He reported the joint commission has formulated various responses to the developmental challenges that Namibia and Zambia are facing. 

“We had some stimulating brainstorming sessions. The views and proposals that emerged have illuminated our way to arrive at concrete and achievable strategies and conclusions,” he briefed. 

In addition, he said officials have agreed that the two governments have a responsibility to redouble efforts to promote closer cooperation in the areas they have identified as critical. 

Both countries also agreed to enhance coordination and exchange of reciprocal visits between the various line ministries of the two countries, to ensure full implementation of the agreed minutes. 

Both parties agreed to hold regular diplomatic and political consultations, which will serve as a mid-term review to track progress on the implementation of decisions taken between joint commission sessions, and other bilateral fora.

“We have reached the point of no return in our resolve to reinvigorate our cooperation. There should be no doubt that we will go forward from here, determined to make a difference to the bilateral relations between our two countries and peoples,” Naanda assured. 

Equally, he said it is time to fulfil the expectations of the peoples in both nations, adding “it is time to turn our cooperation into a potent instrument of development and progress in our countries.”
