Home Sports Navachab Half Marathon on this weekend

Windhoek

The much-anticipated 2nd edition of the annual Navachab Half Marathon (21 km) will this weekend take centre stage at the Usab Stadium in Karibib, with more than 100 athletes expected to take part in the popular race.

Previously one of the biggest events on the Namibian sports calendar the race almost died a natural death following the country’s Independence, due to the lack of sponsors, but renowned sport consultant Berthold Karumendu teamed up with Navachab Gold Mine last year to revive the fortunes of the sought-after race, a move that has yielded much success as the race enters its second year running.

This year Navachab Gold Mine availed a handsome N$45 000 to ensure the smooth running of all proceedings, while Karibib FNB and Karibib OK Furniture also joined the race as co-sponsors with a combined sponsorship of N$10 000.

Winners in the various categories are guaranteed to walk away with some cool prize monies, with the winner in both male and female Under 20-39 age category set to take home N$5 000, while the 2nd and 3rd placed finishers will walk away with N$2 000 and N$1 000 respectively.

In both the male and female Under 13-19 age groups, first placed finishers will pocket N$2 000 while 2nd and 3rd placed finishers take home N$1 000 and N$700 each. In both the male and female veterans categories (U/40-49), winners are guaranteed to pocket N$2 000 , 2nd and 3rd placed finishers set to take home N$1 000 and N$700.

In both the male and female Master categories (50 years and up), the top three finishers will take home N$1500, N$700 and N$500 respectively.
