Preparing tomorrow’s star cyclists, today

WINDHOEK – “Building confidence from an early age lays the foundation for good character and for success in the sporting arena,” says Charmaine Shannon, chief organizer of this year’s edition of Kiddies Classic.

Apart from the Cycle Classic, Rotary Club Windhoek introduced Kiddies Classic more than a decade ago to broaden the gathering’s appeal – hence making Cycle Classic a sporting event for the entire family, young and old.
This year’s edition of Kiddies Classic takes place on the afternoon of Saturday, 13th of October, immediately after the mountain bike race prize-giving ceremony.

A well-known children’s sports coach, Shannon routinely arranges training camps and sporting events for the little ones. Six years ago, she partnered with Rotary Club and now annually organizes and runs the Kiddies Classic.  Herself a keen cyclist, Shannon says she is very passionate about working with children, adding, “I derive satisfaction from seeing how a shy youngster blossoms and gains confidence through sports coaching.”

“And if they excel as a cyclist, swimmer or in the sporting arena, it becomes a huge bonus”, adds Shannon.
Cycle Classic is a community service and fundraising event under the auspices of Rotary Club Windhoek, and started way back, just short of two decades ago in 1999. The event takes place in Windhoek over two days on Saturday and Sunday , 13 and 14 October.
