WINDHOEK – A security guard was arrested on Saturday after running off with more than N$200 000 that he was meant to deposit on behalf of his employer in Gobabis.
According to the Namibian Police Force (Nampol), the suspect who was employed as a guard at a business in Gobabis was given N$219 331 to deposit at the bank.
“It is further alleged that at about 10h30 the supervisor of suspect discovered that the money was not yet deposited and that the suspect instead disappeared. The supervisor searched for the suspect but could not find him and decided to report the matter to the police at about 12h00,” explained Nampol’s spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi.
It is alleged that instead of depositing the money as instructed at the local bank, the guard took off with the money and threw a party for himself and his friends.

The suspect was traced, apprehended and a ragbag containing an amount of N$166 115 was confiscated from him at about 16h30, at a shack situated in Canaan-A residential area of Epako, Gobabis. The suspect was found partying with friends, drinking alcohol and smoking drugs.
In an unrelated matter in Epako, a Chinese national was robbed while shopping in a local shop. It is alleged that a group of four men surrounded the victim in the shop.
According to the police, one of the suspects kept talking to the victim while another one unzipped the bag carried by the complainant from behind and removed N$10 800 in cash unnoticed. When the victim intended to pay for his groceries at the teller, he realised that his ragbag was unzipped and his money missing. During preliminary investigation, the said premises’ CCTV footage was reviewed and the occurrence was detected.
Three males aged 28, 32 and 39 respectively were arrested and N$5 100 was recovered on the same day.
The main suspect is still to be traced.
