Namibia on Saturday sent off a woman’s football team to compete at the Special Olympics Unified Cup in the USA.

The team will depart on 29 of July for the Unified Cup 2022, which brings together over 300 footballers from over 20 countries to compete in football, the world’s most popular sport. This trip is made possible by the NamPower Foundation’s generous donation of N$1.3 million.

The competition brings together athletes with intellectual difficulties and those without such difficulties.

It will take place from 31 July to 6 August in Detroit, USA.

It is the first time Namibia will compete at this event.

Namibia is part of only three African countries that will represent Africa.

The others are Nigeria and Egypt.

Coach Eliaser Amuthitu told New Era Sport the team have prepared well for this competition, despite receiving an invite on short notice.

He added they will have to deal with what is at their disposal to ensure the team puts up a great performance.

“The day is finally here; we have a decent team of players that are going to compete against the world’s best teams. I am confident with the players that I have and what they are capable of doing on the field, and I am not worried much on the short space of time we had during our preparations, but these girls have proven to me that we are a strong side,” said Amuthitu.

In terms of his expectations, the coach said they will try by all means to at least secure a medal, as he believes the players are good enough.

“I have a good team, and everyone has the spirit of working together. With that, it gives us strength to go out there and do things better,” he said.
