Three die in two hit-and-run incidents

RUNDU – A 45-year-old woman died after she was run over by a vehicle while attempting to cross the Rundu-Nkurenkuru road at Siya village in Kavango West, while two men were fatally hit by a car at Rundu on Saturday night.

The accident at Siya happened at 19h00 on Saturday evening, while the driver didn’t stop to render any assistance nor call the police.

According to the report filed by the police, it is alleged that the unknown driver of a white Toyota VVTi double cab with licence plate N126-092W, (bearing a sticker - Donated by USAID) was driving from Nkurenkuru towards the direction of Rundu when he bumped the pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road.

“The driver overtook a vehicle, and it was in that process that the pedestrian was hit. The deceased was identified as Josephine Kasiku Haingura,’’ said the Kavango West police commander, Josephat Abel.

The victim was a resident of Siya village, and her next of kin have been informed of her death.

“The driver is not known at this stage as he drove away after the accident, parked his vehicle at a nearby shebeen, locked the vehicle and fled on foot into the
woods.

Investigations into the incident continue,’’ Abel noted. In a similar accident, two men were bumped and died on the spot in Rundu’s Sauyemwa location on Saturday night at around 22h00.

The 27-year-old suspect fled the scene without rendering support to the victims. Several passersby who saw the two victims lying next to the road alerted the police, but there were no traffic or police officers on standby to immediately respond to the incident.

They only reported after waking up their regional commander Johanna Ngondo at 22h55, who sent officials to pick up the remains of the victims. They arrived at 23h30. The police at Rundu managed to arrest the suspect, a 27-year-old man, on Sunday morning at Ndama location. The vehicle he drove during the accident was a Mazda sedan.

The victims have not yet been identified, and the police have called on the public to identify them. In a separate incident, a fatal lightning strike took the life of a grade 9 learner from the Ntara Combined School in the Kavango West region on Friday at 06h45.

It is alleged that the deceased was struck by lightning whilst he was walking to school and died instantly. The deceased was identified as Phillip Kazana Siranda, aged 21.

He was residing at Muveve village, Kavango West and he was walking to Ntara village. His next of kin have been informed.
