Toddler drowns in oshikundu

The lifeless body of a one-year-old boy was last week discovered in a bucket of homemade traditional brew called oshikundu at the Akalungu village in Outapi.

Oshikundu is a traditional drink made from fermented millet (mahangu).

According to the police regional commander in Omusati, Titus Shikongo, it is alleged that the incident happened when three children aged one, eight and 10 were alone inside their home while their grandmother was washing clothes at a well in the mahangu field.

“The exact circumstances leading to the drowning are not clear as it was only discovered by the grandmother after finishing her washing when she was told by the other children that they didn’t know where the deceased was, prompting her to start searching for the child,” explained Shikongo.

The victim has been identified as Tomas Diof Andima.

His body has been taken to the Okahao police mortuary for a post-mortem.

Investigations into the matter continue.
