Top race horses to grind shoulders in Rehoboth

The crème de la crème of Namibia’s race horses will converge at the town of Rehoboth tomorrow to battle it out for top honours in the MTC Winter Cup.

The races take centre-stage at the Rehoboth race track. Seasoned race horses such as Visigoth from the Aminuis Racing Club, Starlile from the Okahandja Racing Club, Freedom Fighter from the Ovitoto stable, Newton Spark from the Angermund race horse stable and Leeuloop from the Okahandja Racing Club will all be in action.

This will be the second edition of the MTC Winter Cup, following last year’s inaugural event held at Okahandja. Sponsored by telecommunications giant MTC, the race will see a handsome N$250 000 divided among the winners of the various categories.

No spectators will be allowed at the races,
with the exception of the media, organisers and medical staff, as well as security personnel. The organisers have given the assurance that strict Covid-19 regulations and all relevant health protocols will be enforced at all times. A total of 19 races will feature on the day, and will see close to 200 race horses and their jockeys grinding shoulders for the top prizes.

Speaking to New Era Sport yesterday, Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) vice president Mannes Hendricks said they are looking forward to exciting races and to some stiff competition between the country’s leading horses.

“The top three races to look out for are the Nambred Open 2 000m race, the Import 1 400m and Import 2 400m races. Those are the big ones. Also, top race horses such as Freedom Fighter, Sunnyside, Von Trotha and Leeuloop should all be expected to bring some spark to the events,” enthused Hendricks. “In the Import 400m event, Icon King will be there, but seasonal horse Rockley Beach from Okahandja should not be forgotten. Bring Me More from Kaondeka Racing Club is back after a long break. So, we are very excited as organisers.”

As has become customary, top-drawer action can be expected in the Nambred 2 000m Open category, where old-time campaigners such as Freedom Fighter, Bright Eye, Leeuloop, Sunnyside and Try Again as well as Ouanomake will all be vying for the ultimate prize.

Also, sparkling action can be anticipated in the Open 1 400m category, which boasts an exciting line-up comprising Rockely Beach, Days of Thunder, Icon King, Bring Me More, Extreme Pain, Here’s The Master, Black Market, Warrior Poet as well as Emperor’s Tractor.  More action can equally be expected in the Maidens Juvenile 1 000m, Maidens Juvenile 1 600m, Maidens 1 000m, Maidens 1 600m, Nambred Maidens 1 000m, Nambred Maidens 1 600m, Graduation 1 000m, Graduation 1 600m, Nambred Graduation 1 000m, as well as in the Nambred Graduation 1 800m races. – mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
